Annapurna Ghorepani Poonhill Trek
Trek Grade:A (Medium)
Trek Duration:8 Days
Hotel in KTM/Pokhara: 5 Nights
Season:All Season

ImageThis area, north of Pokhara, Ghorepani offers some of the most dramatic close-up views of the highest and most beautiful mountains in the world. The abrupt variation in altitude found here is astonishing. From the Pokhara airstrip (850m) the summit of Machhapuchre (6,997m) is less than 20 miles away, with no obstructing ranges to spoil the view. In fact the views in the whole area are fabulous. Poon Hill, from where we can have a wonderful glance of the mid-western lined mountains has incredible latitudinal range, unusual geography and a pleasant climate making trekking in this area a real naturalist’s dream. The return trail follows one of the most important trading routes between India and Tibet. This is also a major pilgrimage route. We meet traders and both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims during the trek. The Magars and Gurungs (backbone of the famous Gurkha regiments) are the main inhabitants of this region.

The incredible latitudinal range, unusual geographical and climatic mix makes the trekking in this area a real naturalist’s dream. In less than a week we move from the sub-tropical areas around Pokhara to high Tundra and the glaciers of the sanctuary.

The lower area of the range is inhabited by Gurungs and Magars, the sturdy Gurkhas by legend. Here, the home turf of these friendly smiling people that became the famous Gorkha regiments of the British and Indian armies can be experienced. Pokhara is the main trade center for the whole of this region where Gurungs and Newars live. The return trail follows one of the historical and most important trading routes between India and Tibet. This journey also forms a major pilgrimage route between India and Tibet.
