Ladakh, a part of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, is land like no other. Little Tibet, The Moonland, and The Last Shangri-La are names that have been applied to Ladakh, all of them with bit of truth. In geological term, this is a young land, formed only a few million years ago by buckling and folding of the earth’s crust as the Indian sub-continent pushed with irresistible force against the immovable mass of Asia. It is bounded by two of the world’s mightiest mountain ranges, the Himalayas and Karakoram. It lies on the Western extremity of the Tibetan Plateau, at altitudes ranging from 2,750m at Kargil to 7,672m at Saser Kangri in the Karakoram. It is amongst the most highly elevated inhabited places in the World. Straddling one of the major trade routes to Tibet from Kashmir, it was this route that Buddhism Travel into Tibet from India.
